Project Lifesaver- O'Brien County, Iowa is a program that provides a tracking system to locate
individuals who have the tendency to wander and become lost.
How does it work?
Individuals enrolled in the program wear a bracelet on the wrist or ankle that emits a radio signal every second.
A local law enforcement response team utilizes tracking equipment that picks up this signal that is specific and
personalized for each individual.
Who can utilize the program?
Any person in O'Brien County who has the tendency to wander can benefit from the program. Persons with
dementia and related disorders are candidates for the bracelets, as well as children with Down Syndrome,
autism, and other related disorders and medical conditions.
Why should someone participate in Project Lifesaver- O'Brien County, Iowa?
Peace of mind for caregivers is a primary reason for enrollment in the program. It alleviates the anxiety
associated with wandering habits of loved ones.
What happens when an enrollee wanders?
The caregiver notifies the local law enforcement agency and a search is initiated using trained and certified
tracking personnel. Search times are reduced from hours and days to minutes.
Who sponsors the program?
Project Lifesaver- Iowa is sponsored by Northwest Agency Association in cooperation with Sheriff's Offices in
nine northwest Iowa counties including O'Brien County Iowa.
How do I enroll someone?
To enroll in the program, call Julie Johnson at the NorthWest Aging Association in Spencer at (800) 242-5033.
Julie will explain the process, the requirements of enrollment and funding options before a bracelet is provided.
How much does it cost?
The cost of the transmitter (bracelet) is $300 and a $10 monthly maintenance fee is charged for battery
replacement and ensuring the equipment is working. A payment of $35 per month is available, covering the
cost of the bracelet and the monthly maintenance fee.
To those who qualify, state funding may also be available.
Scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the initial and/or ongoing costs.
Are there other Project Lifesaver programs?
Project Lifesaver was started in Chesapeake, Virginia and is now in 30 states and Canada. Over 1,400
successful searches have been conducted.
